CIRCA 1870, MAKER'S MARK OF ELKINGTON & CO.

Of bell-shaped form on spreading circular foot with scrolling foliage above a band of flowerheads, the body with masks amid foliate and ribbon swags below a reeded band, with a coat-of-arms within an acanthus scroll cartouche, the high domed cover with similar decoration and surmounted by a ram's-head and acanthus bud finial, applied under base with a plaque inscribed Department of Science and Arts, Elkington --14 1/4in. (36.2cm.) high

Lot Essay

A copy of the celebrated cup and cover by Paul De Lamerie of 1739 presented to the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths by John Bridge of the firm of Rundell & Bridge during the term he served as Prime Warden in 1839. Other versions are known, including one in the Art Institute of Chicago.
