LONDON, 1808, MAKER'S MARK OF WILLIAM BURWASH & RICHARD SIBLEY
Of vase-shaped form, the spreading circular foot repousse and chased with a band of acanthus below a fluted calyx on a matted ground, the lower body chased with similar acanthus, applied on one side with a racing scene, below an applied band of Vetruvian scrolls on a matted ground, the bifurcated side handles formed as entwined snakes issuing from a winged maiden's-head and an acanthus socket, the high domed cover with bands of similar fluting and acanthus and surmounted by a free-standing male jockey, the base inscribed DURHAM CUP 1800 and John Trotter Esqr., R.E. Duncombe Shafto Esqr., John Hutchinson, Esqr., Mayor} Stewards, marked on basecover and finial, base apparently lacking maker's mark--17 3/4in. (45cm.) high
