In 1937 Chagall was made a French citizen and his material situation became more secure than it had been for at least a decade. He moved to a new home near the Trocadero and in the spring of 1937 he visited Tuscany and with Bella went to Florence and admitted to being enthralled by the Bellinis, the Titians and the Tintorettos in the Pitti and Uffizi.
He returned to paint with a richer, deeper palette and once again the theme of the bride and groom dominates:
In the "Italian" flower pieces the liveliness of color and texture is identified with the denser structure of the vegetation. As
though sheltered in a cave, amid the thicket of bouquets that fills the sky above the Russian village and accompanied by
Chagallesque animals, the lovers embrace. (F. Meyer, Marc
