This work is painted on the second page of R. Goldwater's 1947 Rufino Tamayo Monograph, on the following page there is a dedication which reads To the Murays from the Tamayos with love.

Nicholas Muray was a famous New York photographer and an early patron of Latin American art. He was closely connected to the important Mexican artists of the day, such as Tamayo, Kahlo and Covarrubias.
