It is likely that the Tofft to whom this drawing is inscribed was a fellow artist, Peter Petersen Tofft, a northwestern landscape watercolorist who came to the United States from Denmark in 1850 and who was also an illustrator for Harper's Magazine and the Illustrated London News. Van der Weyde and Tofft, as itinerant artists, most likely painted together in the West and exchanged their works.
