Mt. Carter represents the culmination of a series of paintings of New Hampshire that Sonntag executed in the 1880s. Exhibited in 1888 at the National Academy of Design, with the hefty price tag of $1,000, this painting was one of the few American landscape paintings included in the prestigous Paris Universal Exhibition of 1889.
