According to Ronald G. Pisano, the tonal palette apparent in this picture is typical of early works that the artist executed while in Munich in the 1870s. Chase painted a very small number of landscapes while studying at the Munich Royal Academy. Although the Academy discouraged landscape painting as an important subject, Chase and his friend and fellow artist J. Frank Currier found visual excitement in the surrounding landscape.
