Lot Essay

In 1921, Frishmuth conceived 'The Vine' as a small statuette, using Rene Wilde as her model. Two years later, she decided to enlarge the figure and to include it in a major exhibition of sculpture being organized by the National Sculpture Society. Desha posed for this life size version which was awarded the Julia A. Shaw prize for the best sculpture by a woman at the 1923 show.
