Lot Essay

The present marble, executed in 1936, is a unique life-size carving of Lovet-Lorski's sensuous torso and one of the largest pieces in his oeuvre. Initially conceived in a smaller size (25 in.), the model was used to illustrate a book of poems written in homage to female beauty by the artist's friend John Erskine and published in a limited edition in Paris in 1932. A copy of the book is being sold with the present marble.

Several examples of the smaller torsos in both white and Belgian marble are known. A white marble example (25 in.) was sold in these Rooms March 18, 1983, lot 105.
