'Shoebill Stork' is one of ten models of birds used in the final design for the Paul J. Rainey Memorial Gateway to the New York Zoological Gardens, Bronx, New York. Commissioned in 1923 by Grace Rainey Rogers, the gateway was dedicated on June 14, 1934.

Examples of the working models for these birds were cast by Pressman-Bauer in a variety of finishes and mounted on elegant bases, often of semi-precious stones such as lapis lazuli. The initials 'AC' are those of Angelo Colombo, an artist who worked with Manship on the commission.
