A fire raged in the S. Marcuola quarter of Venice during the day of December 28, 1789. The fire covered not only the ground but much of the surrounding water.

There are two paintings of this subject by Francesco Guardi: one in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich and the other in the Accademia, Venice (A. Morassi, Guardi*i, 1973, I, p. 369, nos. 312-13; II, figs. 337-38) for which there are preliminary drawings by Francesco Guardi of the fire in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museo Correr, Venice. (A. Morassi, Guardi. Tutti i Disegni, 1975, p. 133, figs. 313-14)
The above lot may be identifiable with a version by Giacomo Guardi noted by A. Morassi (Guardi, 1973, I, p. 369, under no. 312) in the collection of H.G. Sperling, New York. The dimensions of this painting, also on panel, are listed, probably incorrectly, as 10.5 x 9.5 cm.
