Lot Essay
The present lot, along with four other panel form part or all of a series, have been identified: the so-called Entry of Charles of Anjou into Siena (10 x 14in.) in the Barnes Foundation, Merion, Pennsylvania; A Court Scene (11 x 15in.), with Thos. Agnew & Sons, London, formerly attributed to Benozzo Gozzoli but ascribed to the Sienese School c. 1450 by C. Whitfield in 1973 (loc. cit); The Presentation of the Flag of Siena (11 1/2 x 15 3/8in.) in the Christian Museum, Esztergom, Hungary, attributed to Vecchietta; and A Jousting Tournament (10 1/4 x 15 3/8in.) which passed through the Salavin sale, Paris, Dec. 5, 1973, attributed to Giovanni di Paolo.
The five panels have been associated not only because of their like style and dimensions, but on the basis of similarities in setting, civic subject matter, and the reappearance of some of the same figures. Whitfield (loc. cit.) has suggested that they represent scenes from the life of Charles of Anjou, and that he is the central figure, repeated throughout the sequences
