F.M. Perkins (op. cit, 1911) and R. van Marle (op. cit., 1924 and 1934) consider the present lot to be a replica of Fei's Madonna della Neve above the Piccolimini altar in the Siena Cathedral, as does G.H. Edgell (op. cit., 1931) who considers the panel to be an early work by Fei. Likewise M. Mallory (op. cit., 1965 and 1969) considers the present lot to be Fei's earliest surviving work and dates it to around the late 1370s
