Lot Essay

Two old labels on the reverse bear the numbers n.27731 and n.50505. There is also a wax collector's seal with a plumed knight's helmet and the inscription 'James Restorer Manchester'

The present lot exists in several versions: a reduced composition ascribed to Solimena formerly with Leger Galleries, London; a smaller version, given to Solimena, previously with Newhouse Galleries, New York (see advertisement, Burlington Magazine, September 1952); and a third version at Braunschweig, on loan from the government.
