Lot Essay

The present lot would appear to be a replica after the original painting by Tintoretto in the Detroit Institute of Arts. Another workshop version is in the Accademia, Venice.

It may be surmised from the age of the sitter as well as from his position as Doge (1559-1568) that the original painting was executed c. 1561-7
