Lot Essay
The present lot is possibly identifiable with the painting cited in M.J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, 1972, IXa, no. 39a, illustrated pl. 57, which was in the Duke of Fife sale, London, July 18, 1924, lot 110 and was exhibited at the Guildhall, London in 1906, no. 44. Catalogued as Joos van Cleve (?), the dimensions of the painting in Friedländer, 61 x 46cm., differ just slightly from those of the present lot.
The composition of the present lot derives from Durer's painting of 1521, commissioned by a Portuguese patron in Antwerp and now in the Lisbon museum
