The subject of the present lot comes from the Odyssey (Book XXIII). Athena and Eurynome prepare Ulysses to meet his long awaiting wife, Penelope, as the servants in the background make their bed. It may be that the woman is Penelope herself who wonders if the man before her is indeed her husband
