First exhibited in plaster at the Salon of 1885, the statuette of Diane Victorieuse was the artist's final triumph. Responding to public demand for table-top figurines, the ailing Carrier-Belleuse devoted himself to the conception of this model. His attention to lavish detail and to contrast of texture celebrated the huntress' sensuous femininity in a manner that also emphasized the fabled independance of the goddess.

Aware that Diane Victorieuse was to be the successful culmination to a long career, Carrier-Belleuse arranged before his death for the marble statuette to be exhibited alongside his earlier Bacchante (1863) in the Salon of 1887.
