A native of Suzhou, Zhang Zongcang studied painting with the well-traveled and versatile painter Huang Ding (1660-1730) during his retirement in the city. Zhang received his appointment as a painter in the imperial court of the Emperor Qianlong as a result of presenting several of his paintings to the ruler during his Southern Inspection Tour of 1751.
