Lot Essay

The poem alludes to the enjoyment of a free life, and the inscription states that the bottle was engraved by Zhou Honglai in Xiling (near Hangzhou). However, a white glass bottle, illustrated by Robert W. L. Kleiner, Chinese Snuff Bottles in the Collection of Mary and George Bloch, Hong Kong, 1987, col. pl. 134, by the same artist, bearing a cyclical date equivalent to 1903, was engraved in Nanjing. The author states that Zhou Honglai was one of a number of artists who specialized in incising miniature inscriptions on snuff bottles, ivory screens and ivory plaques between 1900 and 1950, and continues that Zhou was from Nanjing and his known works date from 1902 to 1909. Two bottles dated, respectively, 1904 and 1909, were exhibited at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, October, 1978, Catalogue nos. 244 and 245
