TANG DYNASTY

The muscular horse shown with right hoof raised and head turned slightly to the left, with mouth open and ears pricked forward, the neck grooved for a mane, extensive traces of white pigment on the body and red and black pigment used for detailing, restored--25 1/2 in. (64.7cm.) long

Lot Essay

A very similar horse was discovered in the tomb of Li Siben, who died in 675, but whose tomb was not completed until 709, Kaogu, 1986, no. 5, p. 439, fig. 16. Compare, also, the similar horse of large size sold with a groom in these rooms, December 2, 1989, lot 124

The result of Oxford thermoluminescence test no. 566z52 is consistent with the dating of this lot
