A LARGE LACQUER BOX AND COVER
EDO/MEIJI PERIOD (19TH CENTURY)

The rectangular box with four lobed corners decorated on the lid in gold and silver takamaki-e, silver togidashi and gold foil with a view of the entrance to Toshogu shrine at Nikko, with views of the surrounding area continued on the sides of the box, fitted with a tray of matching shape decorated in gold and colored takamaki-e on a gold ground sprinkled with nashiji with the red sacred bridge to the shrine over a rushing stream, the interiors and undersides of the tray and box nashiji, silver mounted- 8 1/2 x 6 3/4 x 3 1/2 in. (21.5 x 17.2 x 8.7 cm.), losses to gold foil, some fading and wear
