A TWO TIERED LACQUER KOBAKO
MEIJI PERIOD (19TH CENTURY)
The rectangular box lavishly decorated with 'framed' panels of birds and flowers set at angles around the sides and on the lid of the box, each rendered in gold and silver and red takamaki-e with numerous embellishments, including aogai, togidashi, hiramaki-e, silver and cut gold, reserved on a gyobu and nashiji ground, the upper tier fitted with four small removable boxes lacquered in gold with formal chrysanthemum sprays within and without an aogai border, the box also fitted with a recessed rectangular tray decorated in togidashi with stands of flowers on a gold ground, the interiors of the box and inner boxes nashiji, set on a footed fundame stand with a band of aogai above the apron which matches the interior box lids - 5 1/4 x 3 1/4 x 3 1/4 in. (13.4 x 10.2 x 8.4 cm.) excluding stand, minor edge nicks or slight cracks
