BUCHANAN, JAMES, President. Autograph letter signed in full to Miss Eliza Watterston, Wheatlands, near Lancaster, Pennsylvania,
3 May 1853. One page, 4to, on pale blue laid paper, with original postmarked, stamped envelope addressed by Buchanan.
"SPICY" LETTERS AND A "TÊTE-À-TÊTE"
A playful, quite flirtatious letter, from the only bachelor to occupy the White House. "The only reason why I have not 'ere this long answered your spicy, agreeable letter was the confident belief that I should soon enjoy the pleasure of a tete à tete with your ladyship. On my last visit to Washington, although occupied day and night with business, I had twice fixed a time to pay my willing devoirs; but on each occasion was interrupted. I expect daily to be called to Washington...I shall not sleep there without first having presented myself at your shrine. My apparent neglect has given me real pain...
I would have remained another day in Washington; but was obliged to be in Philadelphia....Miss Kelly and myself are jogging on together after the old hum drum but to me most agreeable fashion. Harriet [Lane] has been absent in Philadelphia....Fare well! until next we meet...." Harriet Lane, Buchanan's orphan niece became, during Buchanan's Presidency, the official White House hostess.
