DAVIS, JEFFERSON, President, C.S.A. Autograph letter signed in full to Mr. Mikell, New Orleans, Louisiana, 8 May 1876. 2 1/2 pages, 8vo.

DAVIS TO AN EARLY CONFEDERATE AUTOGRAPH COLLECTOR

The former Confederate President "regrets that my absence from Memphis prevents me from making the inquiries there which you desired for autographs to complete your list. The same cause separated me from my correspondence...so far as letters have been preserved....I have added to the list you sent, such information as I possess, as to the fate and address if living....

"Col. Thos. H. Taylor, of the 1st Ky. Regt. [the 'Orphan Brigade'] was sent with a letter to Presidt. Lincoln, but not allowed an interview with him. G'nl [Winfield] Scott took the letter, and after some delay, gave Col. Taylor an assurance that the letter would be answered. That assurance was not fulfilled. The letter however probably prevented the execution of the Captives. Col. Taylor is, I believe, still living, and was recently a resident of Louisville...."
"It is strange that any Confederate should not sympathize with you in your laudable and patriotic purpose....I am inclined to attribute the failure to answer your letters to the probable want of ability to send to you the autographs you desired...." Davis thanks the collector for his "gratifying expressions of regard for me personally," and for his "love for our cause."
