SUPPLIES FOR THE PENNSYLVANIA CONTINENTALS

An interesting letter, written in Greene's typically bold, unusually large hand. In the aftermath of the atrocious supply problems during the winter encampment of 1777-78 at Valley Forge, Greene had reluctantly taken over the post of Quarter Master General; the good effects of his management were evidenced in the Middletown winter encampment of 1778-79. "The General [George Washington] has given me order to put the Pennsylvania Troops in a condition to march as soon as possible. You will therefore deal out to them near or quite near their full proportion of Tents and all other kinds of Stores without regarding the deficiency as the state of the stores now stand. There is forty or fifty...tents now on the way from Philadelphia and a considerable number of Canteens, out of which the deficiencies for the other troops may be made up. The Stores for the Pennsylvania brigades must be drawn and delivered out this evening...."
