Hamilton was the renowned lawyer who successfully defended John Peter Zenger against the charge of seditious libel by the colony of New York in 1735, In this letter he requests of a fellow attorney that a writ be issued against one James Robinson on the charge of trespass and willful destruction of property of one Thomas Avane: "...It is much against Mr. Avane's Inclination but the Def[endan]t is so very base and Insolent that there is no means left to preserve the property from the Destruction Robinson is dayly committing but to punish him in this manner which in my opinion is very just...". A draft of the writ is added as postscript. Very rare.

Provenance: Joseph M. Roebling (sale, Sotheby Parke Bernet, 28 April 1981, lot 60).
