A printed appointment as an officer in the "Army of the United States," this example unaccomplished, headed in large type "In Congress," and beneath naming the thirteen states. Blank appointments pre-signed by Laurens were furnished to Continental commanders to fill in when appointing officers. Laurens served as president of Congress during the dates noted above.
