"Mrs. Lewis, wife of Capt. James Lewis, of the Marine Corps calls and asks that her husband may fill the vacancy occasioned by the death of Major Russell. Yours truly A. Lincoln."

Lincoln, though hard-pressed to oversee a difficult war and direct the affairs of government, remained throughout his term of office very accessible to ordinary citizens, government clerks, or, as in this instance, relatives of soldiers who sought from him support or intervention. Lincoln's seemingly inexhaustible patience in dealing with these taxing solicitations is nothing short of remarkable. Basler, Supplement 2, p. 63.
