An interesting account of a noteworthy case in Pierce's career as a trial lawyer. He had resigned his Senate seat in February 1842, returned to New Hampshire and resumed his career as country lawyer. "I have been trying causes...I am in the midst of a trial for the breach of a promise of marriage -- adjourned from the Court House to the largest meeting house which has been crowded. You will judge of the intense interest of the case--Our Gov elect [Henry Hubbard] against me with witnesses now in my room. I have hardly been able to skim your letter...I will write the first moment of leisure, such a moment John I have hardly found from professional engagements since I came home...."
