ROOSEVELT, FRANKLIN DELANO, President. Typed letter signed ("F.D.R.") as President, to Harry L. Hopkins at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.; Washington, D.C., 15 March 1944. One page, small 4to, integral blank on imprinted White House stationery. CONDOLENCES FROM CHURCHILL. "The Prime Minister [Winston Churchill] has just had the enclosed [not present] delivered to us for forwarding to you. I was wondering if you would like to retun it to us and we could have it photostated so that a copy could go to Stephen's mother, his brothers, Diana and perhaps you would like the extra one. I would also like to have a copy. I am delighted that you made the trip so well to Rochester..." A pencilled note at the bottom explains that Churchill had sent a quotation from Shakespeare as condolence for Hopkins' son (killed in action with the Marine Corps).
