STANTON, EDWIN M., Secretary of War under Lincoln and Johnson. Autograph letter signed in full as Secretary of War, TO MAJOR GENERAL WILLIAM T. SHERMAN in Atlanta, Georgia; Washington, D.C., 26 September 1864. One page, 4to, on lined paper with printed heading "Washington City"), with one correction in the text by Sherman.

A vivid wartime dispatch from the Secretary of War to Sherman (who had completed the capture of Atlanta on 2 September) giving important news of a change in the Confederate command, Sheridan's movements and the Mobile campaign. "The Richmond Enquirer of Saturday rejoices that 'Beauregard has been assigned to the command of the Army in Georgia, that his star ever led to victory and his very name inspires confidence of success.' A report comes to the Navy Department via Memphis and Cairo that Mobile has surrendered. I do not credit it. [Philip] Sheridan has pushed up the [Shenandoah] valley to New Market [Virginia]...." Stanton proved correct: the report of the fall of Mobile was erroneous.
