Lot Essay

The crest is that of Lynde, as borne by Benjamin Lynde (b.1700, m.1731), Chief Justice of Massachusetts. This crest, engraved in the same hand, appears on a cann by Jacob Hurd bearing the full coat-of- arms of Benjamin Lynde, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (Buhler, American Silver, 1972, fig. 190, p. 230). The Lynde arms also appear on a tankard by Pygan Adams at the Yale University Art Gallery.
