FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE, frontispiece (dated 1906) and two illustrations, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Clemens on the front paste-down endpaper: "To Dr. Halsey with the Kindest regards of the Author. March 1907." The recipient, Dr. Robert H. Halsey, was one of two physicians who attended the terminally-ill Clemens (who had just returned from Bermuda) on the train journey from New York to his home in Redding, Conn., where he died on 21 April 1910 (see Albert Bigelow Paine, Mark Twain: a Biography, 1912, vol. 3, pp. 1573-1574).
