London, Paris, Berlin, Philadelphia: The Société Universelle Lyrique 1899. 10 vols., large folio, each volume in a differently colored morocco (brown, blue, turquoise, dark blue, maroon, red, purple and 3 shades of green), covers with double gilt vine stem border and variously colored onlaid morocco gilt floral cornerpiece ornaments surrounding a central gilt lyre bearing Verdi's monogram, the lyres of the upper covers with colored morocco onlays, spines in six compartments, three gilt-lettered, onlaid morocco gilt fleuron in the others, turn-ins gilt, doublures in green, olive, red, brown, turquoise, bright blue or dark blue morocco with ornate onlaid morocco and pointillé gilt dentelle border, at center of each doublure a different onlaid morocco gilt rose or other flower, upper doublures with the gilt monograms "LBJ" and "RJ" above and below the flower, variously colored silk liners, g.e., board folding boxes (most broken), occasional slight rubbing to extremities of spines, a few light spots or stains to some covers, spines very slightly faded, one or two liners detaching from paper backing. "The New England Edition", titles in sanguine and black, vol. I frontispiece photogravure of a bust of Verdi, numerous photogravure plates, most in two states (printed in black, green, or sanguine on tipped-in Japanese vellum, and color-printed on heavy card), halftone text illustrations and historiated initials in green, black, blue or red.
