"THERE IS NO PLANTATION...KNOWN AS 'TARA'..."
"I am enclosing a pamphlet put out by my publishers last year. I hope that it will be of value to you in your book report and that it will answer your questions. None of the characters [in Gone With the Wind] were based on real people. There is no plantation known as 'Tara,' nor, to the best of my knowledge, has there ever been one such as I described. Thank you so very much for the many fine things you said about 'Gone With the Wind'..." The pamphlet is still present: Margaret Mitchell and Her Novel, Gone With the Wind. New York: MacMillan l936. 12mo., 22pp. pictorial wrappers.
