(10 13/16 x 7 x 1/2 in.), A JEWELLED BINDING WITH 43 STONES ON AN ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT, chestnut levant morocco, covers with outer borders of onlaid green morocco gilt bands around an inner border of poppy plants in onlaid red and green morocco, the flowers on the upper cover alternating with 20 MOTHER-OF-PEARL INSET PANELS, and with gilt onlays of black morocco on the lower cover, upper cover with an inner frame of black morocco with red morocco onlays and 22 TURQUOISES, surrounding a large rectangular panel with overall gilt diaper design of small gilt and onlaid flowers on alternating grounds of brown and green morocco, at center a large keyhole-shaped recessed panel framed by a triple band of black and brown morocco, the innermost black band onlaid with red morocco and SET WITH 20 GARNETS, the panel containing a black and tan onlaid morocco gilt raven with A GARNET EYE, standing in front of a vase in onlaid blue morocco and above a pedestal in onlaid brown morocco gilt, richly gilt-tooled flowers and curling stems emerging from the vase and filling the background; lower cover with the same diaper panel framed in blue and red onlays and without the recessed inner panel; spine in six compartments, green morocco gilt lettering-pieces in two compartments, the others richly gilt-tooled with green morocco onlays; green morocco doublures framed in a lighter green morocco gilt band around a wide inner border of chestnut morocco filled with swirling intertwining rose plants in onlaid green and white morocco gilt, terracotta silk liners, g.e., stamp-signed on upper doublure: "Illuminated and Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe London"; very minor rubbing to upper corners and head and tail of spine, one or two very small frayed spots to liners near the hinge, liners and conjugate paper fly-leaves loosening slightly; dark green morocco velvet lined box with hinged lids and snap fasteners (scraped and worn, with old repairs).
ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, 11 leaves (written or illuminated on 20 pages including colophon page), plus 3 blank vellum fly-leaves at front and two at end, two additional paper fly-leaves, written in a semi-gothic hand in black with initials in blue, red or burnished gold and first word in red, title-page (on verso of first leaf) with title in red and black ink and large historiated initial "T" containing a watercolor portrait miniature of Poe signed with Alberto Sangorski's monogram and with marginal acanthus and flower extensions in blue, green, purple and burnished gold forming a nearly full page-border, an oval watercolor vignette of a man reading at foot of the opening text page, the first and last text-pages each with a large ornamental initial, the first on a criblé gold ground, and with a respectively full and three-quarter page-border in stylized floral and foliate design in colors and burnished gold and with penwork tracery.
