WHITMAN, WALT. Autograph letter signed (large signature) to an unnamed correspondent, Camden, 18 May 1884. One page, 8vo, minor mounting residue on verso. "Thank you deeply for sending me the excellent picture of Father Taylor -- just what I wanted -- I have penned a short informal reminiscence of Father T (in 1859) which may be printed in a magazine -- If so I shall send you a copy."
Not in The Collected Writings of Walt Whitman and apparently unpublished. A letter to Charles W. Eldridge of 7 May 1884 requests a picture of "Father Taylor, the old sailor preacher," and this present letter could well also be to Eldridge. Whitman had heard Edward Thompson Taylor preach in the Seaman's Chapel in Boston prior to the Civil War. His article, "Father Taylor and Oratory," later appeared in The Century Magazine.
