CUSTER, GEORGE ARMSTRONG, Major General. Document signed ("G A Custer Lt. Col. 7th C[avalry]"), n.p. [Dakota Territory], 13 September 1875. One page, small folio, signature very slightly smudged. On a printed form headed "The United States" and accomplished in manuscript, the commanding officer of the 7th cavalry, who had just returned from his Black Hills Expedition (following the discovery of gold there a few months before), certifies, "on honor, that the foregoing account is correct and just...that the telegrams for which I have paid...were all on public service...and that the matter demanded this mode of communication...." Custer's account, covering telegrams sent between 11 and 30 August, totals $8.24.
