Garfield") as Brigadier General of Volunteers, n.p., 1 August 1863, one page, oblong 4to, accomplished in manuscript, an interesting voucher by which Garfield claims a total of $304.00 for pay, clothing and "subsistence" for himself and his "three private servants, not soldiers," named, "Professor," "Andrew," and "Edmund," all "colored"; Document signed as above, n.p., 3 May 1863, one page, oblong 4to, a similar voucher for clothing and subsistence for Garfield and the same three servants, all "black"; Document signed as above, n.p., 18 April 1863, one page, oblong 4to, another similar, naming the black servants in full; Document signed as above, n.p. 18 April 1863, one page, oblong 4to, another similar, recording expenditures for the same three servants.
At this time, Garfield was serving as Chief of Staff to Maj. Gen. William S. Rosecrans, commander of the Army of the Cumberland.
