Corbett was one of a party of Union soldiers who cornered Lincoln's assassin, John Wilkes Booth, in a barn near Port Royal, Virginia, in the early hours of 26 April 1865. Booth refused to surrender and the soldiers set the barn afire. Booth was fatally shot and died a few hours later. According to some accounts, Corbett shot Booth fatally through a crack in the wall; others dispute this version of events (see William Hanchett, The Lincoln Murder Conspiracies, 1986, pp.134 & 169.)
