Accompanying the lot is a copy of a letter from Judith O'Toole dated June 9, 1992, dating this painting to circa 1850-1856 and comparing it to Fruit Still-Life with Pineapple and Pomegranate in the collection of the National Museum of American Art and Ecstatic Fruit in the Shelburne Museum. According to O'Toole, "Roesen often inluded a wine glass or pilsner in his compositions but sometimes removed them before the sale of picture at the purchaser's request if offense was taken at the reference to alcohol..."
