Strand sailed to Europe in 1911 where he stayed for about three months. While there, he photographed with a small hand-held camera producing contact prints from enlarged negatives on platinum paper. It is well documented that he handcolored some of these, a process he would repeat four years later as he traveled across the U.S. photographing college campuses for commercial purposes.
