Lot Essay

King Christian IV visited Queen Anne and King James, his sister and brother-in-law, in England in 1606 and again in 1614. His portrait was painted on each occasion, and the present lot is a replica of a portrait by Gheeraerts the Younger's (Art Museum, Princeton University, NJ) executed in July 1614.
