The central tablet is after a marble relief by Francois Duquesnoy in the Galleria Doria Pamphili, Rome. The subject is after ancient Roman sarcophagus reliefs and was copied widely in France during the 18th century by sculptors such as Claude Michel, called Clodion (1738-1814). A very similar chimneypiece was sold Christie's Wrotham Park, 22 May 1990, lot 132.
