Each cartouche-shaped padded back and seat upholstered in crimson floral silk within a frame centered by a winged cartouche and pendant blossoming foliage, with padded scroll arms carved with cabochon, on cabriole legs ending in scroll toes (2)

Lot Essay

This pair of fauteuils was part of an important suite of Louis XV giltwood seat furniture attributed to Nicolas Heurtaut from the Collection of Victor Rothschild Esq. included in the catalogue of the contents of 148 Piccadilly sold Sotheby's London, 19-22 April 1937 as lots 393 and 394 but withdrawn before the sale. These copies must have been made after the suite came to England.

Nicolas Heurtaut, mâitre in 1755 and recorded as having worked until 1770. A related giltwood fauteuil is illustrated in B. Pallot, LArt du Siège au XVIIIe Siècle en France, 1987, p. 165.
