A SAOTOME STYLE TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1850)

The oval iron plate is carved on both sides with wide, radiating grooves and thin lines that run between them. The left and right sides have an openwork design of the pine-river-diamond crest (matsukawabishi mon). The hammered rim and edge show some iron bones. The surface of the plate is covered with at least two layers of original brown lacquer--height 8.6cm., width 7.9cm., thickness 5.0mm.

Lot Essay

Although the general appearance is that of a classic Saotome school tsuba, the age and lacquer surface indicate that this is revival school work of the mid-19th century.
