EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1700), SIGNED TADATSUGU

The round iron plate tapers slightly to the edge (goishi), and is pierced with three oars and two dots representing water spray. The edge has good iron bones--height and width 7.8cm., thickness 5.0mm.

The artists who signed Tadatsugu are usually associated with the Umetada school. There were several variations of the signature but all the artists seemed to live just before 1650 or after 1725.

Dr. Compton purchased this tsuba, the first in his collection, in 1933.
