AN ONIN STYLE TSUBA
MUROMACHI PERIOD (CIRCA 1550)

The round iron plate has an openwork design of checkerboard pattern, inlaid in brass, with three bars in a circle (kiki maru) the family crest of the Abe and other daimyo families. The plate has brass inlay of chrysanthemum, leaves and wire lines. The square hitsu-ana are original. Some of the brass wire is missing--height 8.2cm., width 8.1cm., thickness 4.0mm.

Lot Essay

This style of Onin tsuba combining early inlay with a late plate illustrates that this type of tsuba was popular for over one hundred and fifty years.
