A HEIANJO STYLE TSUBA
EDO PERIOD (CIRCA 1650)

The oval iron plate is formed as two ginger plant buds (myoga) (tip to base) and the surface, on both sides, is inlaid in brass drawn wire with sheet brass edges--height 8.2cm., width 7.9cm, thickness 5.0mm.

Lot Essay

This design, also a family crest, must have been very popular in the early Edo period as many examples are extant. This piece is very unusual , as it is in perfect condition and the brass inlay has its original patination intact.
